Another semester has come, as has another round of promising events and activities for the campus' enjoyment. Lancer Productions, Longwood's student-run programming board, is gearing up for a semester of free movies, comedians, concerts, and speakers, all free admission for students.
On Friday, September 2, Lancer Productions will be holding a screening of "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," the latest film in the "Pirates" franchise. This will take place in the ABC rooms of Lankford Student Union at 7:30 pm. The film will be played again on Monday, September 5 at 2:00 pm in the same location for the Monday Movie.
On Thursday, September 08, Lancer Productions brings Peruvian singer Diego Val to our campus. Val plays acoustic guitar and will be playing in the Lancer Café at 5:30 pm for Thursday Jams. Val was 1st runner-up in Latin America's installation of "American Idol."
On Friday, September 09, Lancer Productions will be bringing "Paintball LIVE on CAMPUS." This event will take place on Stubbs Lawn, and teams of five can battle it out in the designated 100 ft. x 65 ft. area. All equipment will be provided to participants.
Also on September 09, the LP Movie of the night will be "The Hangover: Part II." The movie will take place in the ABC rooms of the student union at 7:30 pm.
On Saturday, September 10, "Welcome Back Bingo" will take place in the student union at 9:00 pm. The prizes will consist of basic necessities students may need to re-up on, as well as prizes such as gift certificates.
On September 11, at 2:00 pm, an encore viewing of "The Hangover: Part II" will be showing in the ABC rooms of the student union.
On Wednesday, September 14, Denice Ann Evans of J'Hue Film Productions, will be presenting a documentary called, "Spitting Game: The College Hook-Up Culture." The exposé takes a look at college promiscuity, and the culture that we are living in that promotes and reinforces it. This will take place at 7:00 pm in Jarman auditorium.
On Saturday, September 17, Lancer Productions will host "The Price is Right" in Jarman auditorium. Admission is free, and contestants stand to win a wide array of prizes. This event will take place at 9:00 pm.
On Wednesday, September 21, comedian Tracey Ashley will be coming to Longwood to perform her comedy act. This event will take place at 8:00 pm in the student union ballroom.
On Saturday, September 24, the LP Movie of the night will be "Cars 2," at 2:30 pm in the ABC rooms. The movie will be shown again Sunday at 2:00 pm also in the ABC rooms of the student union.
On Thursday, October 6, Lancer Productions welcomes Canadian singer Darrelle London for Thursday Jams. She has performed with Sarah McLachlan, and her music has been featured on the CW Network's "90210" soundtrack. London will perform in the Lancer Café at 5:30 pm.
On Wednesday, October 19, "The Asia Project" will be coming to Longwood. Asia is a performing artist and poet that has appeared on programs such as HBO's "Def Poetry." Having going through a battle with cancer in 2006, Asia uses his personal experiences and incorporates them with humor and poetry and storytelling. This event will take place in Wygal auditorium at 7:00 pm.
On Saturday, October 22, there will be an outdoor viewing held at the Longwood Athletics Complex of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows—Part 2." The last film in the Harry Potter series will be shown at 9:00 pm.
All of the Halloween fun will begin on Saturday, October 29, when Lancer Productions will be taking a trip to Williamsburg to go to Busch Gardens for their annual "Howl-O-Scream" event. Lancer Productions is leaving at 8:00 am and the trip is free. On Sunday, October 30 at 7:00, Dr. Jordan will be telling ghost stories in Blackwell auditorium, as per tradition, and Lancer Productions will be having its annual bonfire on Iler Field immediately afterwards.
On Halloween day, at 12:00 pm, "Healing the Earth: A Sacred Art by Tibetan Monks" will take place in the student union ballroom. At 8:00 pm in Jarman auditorium, "Getting Back in the Game (and Shattering Stereotypes along the Way" will be held. Our guest speaker, Jason Regier's life changed completely when he suffered a spinal cord injury in 1996, while driving on the way to begin his final semester in college. He soon discovered "quad" rugby.
These are the events that will last you until the middle of the semester.
