On Saturday, Aug. 27, with Irene's rain coming down and the wind blowing, the Longwood Lancers men's soccer team defeated the Randolph Wildcats 2-0. The Lancers took control of the game early when sophomore midfielder Nick Surkamp scored right before the third minute. Surkamp took control of a loose ball in the penalty box and kicked the ball over the Wildcats' goalkeeper. The second goal came in the second half in the 62ndminute when freshman forward Zach Crandall scored his first collegiate goal. Crandall dribbled it in from the left side of the penalty box and snuck it under the goalkeeper. Both goals were unassisted and occurred when the Lancers capitalized on an opportunity.
The Lancers kept the pressure on throughout the first half as they outshot the Wildcats 5-2 and also attempted more corner kicks 5-2. Longwood took a 1-0 lead into halftime and were playing with plenty of confidence. There were two yellow cards given in the first half, one to Surkamp and the other to Randolph's junior midfielder Joe Skaja.
Longwood kept the intensity high in the second half and did not allow Randolph to get a shot attempt off. Longwood got off five shot attempts of their own and attempted seven corner kicks to a mere two by Randolph. Senior goalkeeper Joel Helmick recorded his seventh career shut out. One yellow card was given in the second half to Wildcats' sophomore Nick Reemtsen.
