This semester, many of our College Pan-Hellenic Council (CPC) sororities are making strong initiatives to better our campus and, in some cases, the world. Our women are very proud to announce events coming up for their philanthropies and causes dear to their heart. This semester we have seen a drastic increase in the amount of special events held and attended to honor those in need.
Sigma Kappa held their annual Walk to End Alzheimer's on Sept. 29. They also held a Chick-fil-A night on Sept. 28 to raise money for that philanthropy. They will also be presenting King of Heartson Nov. 9. Organizations can nominate a male to compete for the title of Longwood's Big Man on Campus! The competition will include talent, formal wear and Q&A sections. The sisters of Sigma Kappa also participate in intramural sports teams and regularly visit Wayland Nursing Home.
Alpha Sigma Tau will host a Cystic Fibrosis Walk on Oct. 15 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Brock Commons. Light snacks will be provided and there will be live music from The Ben Phelps Project. They will sign off on any community service hours for those who come to support their walk for a cure.
Kappa Delta is hosting the "Go Confidently Collection" purse drive now until Oct. 19. There are boxes at various locations around campus to collect purses to promote and build confidence among girls and women in difficult situations. The purses will be donated to Madeline's House, a shelter for battered women and their children. Kappa Delta also sponsored a dental drive all of September. One of their alumni is teaching in a third world country where many children have no running water or dental hygiene supplies. They also hosted a bowling night on Sept. 27 and have been participating in Pan-Hellenic kickball games with Pi Kappa Phi on Tuesdays
Finally, Alpha Delta Pi just took a trip to the Ronald McDonald House in Richmond with more than 15 sisters to help the organization clean up their "house." The sisters make at least one trip there per semester to support their philanthropy. They also collect tabs from cans for Ronald McDonald House, which the organization uses to raise money. This summer at their International Grand Convention, President Rachel Fortney received several awards on behalf of the chapter including the 2011 Harris Finance Award and the 2011 Alpha Member Excellence award. Last semester, their GPA was the highest of all the CPC chapters at a 3.334 and their new member class had the second highest GPA of the CPC chapters at a 2.926.
