Road Trip to the Real World

Who likes to go on road trips? Better yet, who likes FREE road trips? Well you are in luck because the Academic & Career Advising Center is taking a group of 10 students to Richmond, Virginia to get a taste of what it's like working in the real world.  Participants will visit Sports Backers, the Greater Richmond YMCA and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  The trip is open to all students and all majors.

The Road Trip to the Real World is a great opportunity to visit companies and organizations and to learn about their respective industry.  This is also a great way to find your internship or secure a future job!

Laneka Brown attended the Road Trip last fall. The group went to the Wolftrap Theatre in Vienna and the Signature Theatre in Arlington. Jeff Daniels of the movie "Dumb and Dumber" was there to give a speech later.

Laneka had a great experience on the trip.  "It was a good way to gain insight on the things you would do as an intern.  The interns would talk to us and show us around to give us an idea of a typical day.  It was one of the most eye-opening experiences and it was really informative and showed me that the real world isn't that scary.  It can actually be fun and something to enjoy." She also noted that she went on the trip right after she declared her major in Communication Studies, and that it made her all the more happy with her decision.  Laneka plans to attend the next trip as well.

The next Road Trip will be on Oct. 28, 2011. The group will leave Longwood campus at 8 a.m. and will be arriving back in Farmville around 5 p.m. The trip and transportation are free! You are responsible for either packing a lunch or purchasing food on the trip. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011 by 5pm. Bring a completed application and resume by the Academic & Career Advising Center in Lancaster G08 A. Students that want to drive themselves instead of traveling with the group need to contact the Academic & Career Advising Center prior to applying for a spot.

There will be a mandatory Student Orientation on Tuesday Oct. 25, 2011 to better prepare the students for the trip.

Why not take advantage of this great opportunity and pave your way to a successful future! Register for the Road Trip today!
