Shel Silverstein, the well-known children's author is coming to Longwood—well, his plays are. Starting Nov. 30, Longwood University's Theatre Department will be presenting the opening of "An Adult Evening of Shel Silverstein."
The LAB Theatre season usually produces shorter works or collaborations. The productions put on by the LAB are solely and fully student driven and produced, including being directed, designed, performed and managed by Longwood Students. All students are encouraged to participate, not just those that are majoring within the theater department.
"An Adult Evening with Shel Silverstein" takes a more mature take on different stories by the author. The production is split up into a series of vignettes that focus on such issues as parenting, sexuality and even prostitution. The plays are all meant to be witty, border-line vulgar and aimed toward a more mature audience in terms of the content. The Theatre department will be sticking to the original 10 plays that were written by Silverstein. The plays include:
-"One Tennis Shoe"
-"Bus Stop"
-"Going Once"
-"The Best Daddy"
-"The Lifeboat is Sinking"
-"Smile"
-"Watch and Dry"
-"Thinking Up a New Name for the Act"
-"Buy One, Get One Free"
-"Blind Willie and the Talking Dog"
The scripts are a far cry from the classic children stories that Silverstein is known for. In fact, most people would be shocked to know that the scripts were actually written by Silverstein himself.
Silverstein began writing short plays in 1959 and ended up writing over 100.
This production is one of the first by the LAB Theatre for the 2011-2012 season. They will also be putting on their Annual 0-60 Annual Playwriting Festival in late March and April.
This production is not appropriate for younger children. Tickets are based on a first come, first serve basis and will be $5 dollars per ticket. Get there early to reserve your seats and enjoy a full night of twisted humor and sensual entertainment!
