Controversial Huguely Trial Enters Second Week in Charlottesville

The George Huguely trial is entering its second week at Charlottesville Circuit courthouse in Char lottesville, Va. Huguely, a former University of Vir ginia (UVa) lacrosse player, is charged with killing his ex-girlfriend Yeardley Love in May 2010. Pros ecutors built more on their case this week against the Maryland native who pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and other charges.

According to media reports, Prosecutor Dave Chapton has called more than two-dozen witnesses to the stand, some who claim Huguely had a grow ing alcohol problem and was jealous of Love's in volvement with a North Carolina lacrosse player. Huguely confessed to drinking more than 15 drinks before he confronted Love, a star lacrosse player at UVa, the night of her death, according to a taped police statement.

Evidence was picked through Monday in court. Items from both Huguely's and Love's apartments were taken because of red stains that officers said may be blood. The Huguely case has drawn nation al media attention and is questioning both alcohol abuse and domestic violence on college campuses.

Defendants are saying Love's death was acciden tal and involuntary manslaughter is a more appro priate charge for Huguely.
