This week's episode of "Once Upon a Time" saw
major changes in the relationships between Mary
Margaret, David and Kathryn and further development
with Prince James' search for Snow White.
In Fairytale Land, Prince James continues to
evade his father's guards in order to search for
Snow White, while his intended fiancée, Princess
Abigail, arrives in the kingdom for their approaching
nuptials. James escapes the Kings guards only
to be caught by a new pack of hooded guards, these
belonging to Abigail.
It turns out Abigail isn't who we were first led to
believe – a spoiled little princess keeping our lovers
apart. She too has no desire to marry James, because
her heart also belongs to someone else.
Abigail's true love, Frederick, was turned into
gold after protecting her father, King Midas, during
an attack. The golden knight stands in perpetual
battle mode in a monument in the forest. Abigail
tells James that the water from an enchanted lake
can break Frederick's curse, but a horrible creature
guards the lake and kills anyone who venture
there. James promises to get the water and break
the curse, saying, "Either your misery is ended, or
mine is."
When James attempts to take water from the lake,
he is confronted by the creature, a beautiful siren,
who tries to tempt him into drowning by turning
into Snow White. Under water and on the verge
of death, James manages to grab the dagger of a
drowned knight and kill the siren. Returning to
Abigail with the magic water, Frederick's curse is
broken and the two lovers are reunited. James is
inspired to continue his search for Snow White, despite
her rejection.
The last scene in Fairytale Land was merely a replay
from several episodes prior. James arrives at
the cabin in the meadow where Snow White was
previously, only to meet Red Riding Hood there instead.
She tells him that Snow White hasn't been
back there for weeks, but she does love James
and must have been coerced into rejecting him.
James continues his search and the two escape on
horseback from his pursuing father.
Meanwhile in Storybrooke, David's wife Kathryn
reveals that she's been accepted into a law school
in Boston and intends for them to move there and
start their life over. Mary Margaret and David decide
this is the best time to reveal their relationship
to Kathryn, but David doesn't exactly tell her the
whole truth. This leads to a huge public confrontation
between the two ladies in the hall of the school,
and the rest of the town scorns Mary Margaret for
her homewrecker behavior.
Simultaneously, the mysterious Stranger in town
calls Emma up on her offer for a drink. She refuses
to have a drink with someone whose name she
doesn't know, and he tells her his name is August
W. Booth (a highly unlikely story). The two rendezvous
at a wishing well in the woods, where he tells
Emma that the water is magic and has the ability to
return lost things to where they belong.
True enough, later that day Emma finds Henry's
missing fairytale book, last seen in "August's" possession,
in a storm drain under her car. The question
is, did the mysterious writer repair Henry's
book, or did he create a fake double?
Despite Regina's best efforts to keep Kathryn
in town to keep Mary Margaret and David apart,
Kathryn resolves to leave Storybrooke and go to
law school in Boston for a fresh start and to find her
real true love. As regular viewers know, bad things
happen when people try to leave the town.
As Regina burns the letter from Kathryn to David
she stole from their home, the P.E. teacher from
the school (Storybrooke's equivalent of Frederick)
discovers Kathryn's car wrecked just in front of the
town sign. Her airbag is deployed, but there is no
sign of her in or around the car.
The next episode will air in two weeks on March
4 at 8 p.m. on ABC. The back story of the seven
dwarves will be revealed, and everyone in Storybrooke
will have to deal with the aftermath of
Kathryn's disappearance.
