Red Carpet Fashion: The Best and the Worst

On Feb. 26, The 84th Annual Academy

Awards took place once more at the famous

Kodak Theater in Hollywood, Ca. The actual

award show didn't begin until 8 p.m., but

many tuned in early for Red Carpet Hour

where both the good and the bad outfits were

revealed.

Actors and actresses were pulled aside for a

quick chat, and viewers got to see and judge

for themselves who was the best and worst

dressed for the 2012 Oscars. Many walked the

red carpet, and many more turned out to cheer

them on as they made their appearances. The

morning after is always looked forward to,

especially in the fashion world where fashion

magazines and websites reveal the worst and

best dressed.

One top well-dressed contender was Michelle

Williams. For a girl who got her start on

"Dawson's Creek," she has come a long way.

She showed up wearing a strapless, beautiful

coral Louis Vuitton gown, complete with

tiers and details that made for an eye-drawing

wear. With her short hair, sparse jewelry and

simple make-up, including her matching lips,

she seemed nothing but fresh and stunning.

Mila Jovovich was another girl who stole the

show. She made an appearance in a stunning

Elie Saab Couture, baring the off-shoulder

gown with grace and ease. The white paired

with the extravagant crystals made her shimmer

every time she moved. It was an old Hollywood

look made fresh, complete with a

deep red lipstick and a side-swept updo.

"The Help" actress and Oscar award-winner

Octavia Spencer also made quite a splash. She

walked the red carpet with a look put together

by her go-to designer Tadashi Shoji. It was an

off-white dress with beading and layers that

drew together to form a flattering gown that

fell into a short train at the back. The actress

wore a simple hairstyle and earrings to help

her dress stand out even more on its own.

The color theme for best dressed seemed to

stay with soft neutrals, such as off-whites and

creams, and Jennifer Lopez's striking dress

was along these same lines. Lopez appeared

in a gold and cream gown which hugged her

curves and her arms, with slits showing off

her upper arms in an elegant Grecian sweep.

The Zuhair Murad dress was something different

and eye-catching, a piece only a woman

like Lopez could pull off.

While the best dressed were making their

dazzling appearances, so too were the worst.

Long-time actress and "Bridesmaids" star

Melissa McCarthy showed up wearing a light

plum gown that did anything but flatter her

figure. The color washed out her already pale

complexion and the many layers and falling

swoops of the gown made her appear messy

and disarrayed.

"The Help" star Emma Stone also made the

"bad" list. She was dressed in a Giambattista

Valli gown, complete with a bold, bright red

color, a large floppy bow blossoming out of

her neck and a cascading excess of fabric that

pooled around her feet. The actress looked

more like she was drowning in the gown than

wearing it.

Tina Fey also fell short of fabulous in Carolina

Herrera. She took a risk in a navy gown

that had a protruding skirt that started and

ended at the waist, the rest of the gown appearing

beneath. The look overall just made

all of the attention fall to her waist, which appeared

huge in this dress.

In terms of hair, Tom Pitt simply failed. He

looked like a man after his wistful college

years, or maybe like he was preparing for his

role in Troy all over again …

Overall, the night was a success. Jokes were

made, pictures taken and Oscars won. Fashion

had its time to shine, naming both jewelry

and dress designers as actors and actresses

proudly strutted their stuff.
