SGA Addresses Dining, Heating Plant Concerns

On Tuesday, March 6, the Student Government Association (SGA) assembled to discuss a variety of topics affecting the Longwood University community.

Senator Brandon Readus mentioned that Parking Manager Laura Rice plans to replace the faded parking signs that were brought up in a previous meeting. However, Readus said while pot holes and other maintenance issues in the Wynne and Stubbs parking lots were scheduled to be repaired over spring break, repair of those areas will now be outsourced.

Junior Class President Gina DeMarco brought up concerns about the smoke the heating plant emits into the town. She said the smoke was extremely dense and did not seem to be very sustainable. Vice President Matthew Hovey said he would send an email to Real Property and Space Planning Manager Louise Waller addressing the smoke issues.

Several complaints about Longwood Dining were brought up during the meeting. Senator Sarah Sharp said Dorrill Dining Hall workers put out food at the salad bars in the morning only to tell students they could not touch these items until lunch time.

Senators voiced concerns about Einstein Bagels employees, mentioning that a few workers were slow to finish orders, often made incorrect orders and behaved inappropriately at times. Some also expressed concerns about the inadequate training for the workers.

DeMarco said she would inform Director of Longwood Dining Grant Avent and Assistant Director for Operational Excellence for Longwood Dining Brenda Ferguson and request their presence at an upcoming SGA meeting.

Senator Ben Tyree has stepped down from his role as SGA senator; his position will be filled at the next SGA meeting. However, Tyree discussed the attendance policy with the Executive Faculty Senate on March 1 and discovered professors have the ability to choose to enforce the Longwood's attendance policy. The only restriction professors have is that their personal attendance policy cannot be stricter than the university's policy.

Senators had previously discussed that some students were not aware of what being part of the Big South Conference meant for Longwood. Press Secretary David Clipp has now created a fact sheet which will be posted around campus.

The SGA re-allocated $0.37 to Judicial Board for pens and notepads. A total amount of $460 was proposed for the senior class' Senior Week events, but DeMarco made an unfriendly amendment to allocate $410; she felt the seniors should request $50 in smoothie supplies from Longwood Dining, and the motion passed.

As students will not be on campus next week due to spring break, the next SGA meeting will take place Tuesday, March 20 in the BC rooms of Lankford Student Union.
