Two weeks ago, Longwood University Police Department (LUPD) officers were caught trying out a new piece of mobile transportation around campus. It all started when a vendor delivered a couple of golf carts to the university and decided to bring along a Segway- like form of electric transportation for the police department to try. LUPD Chief of Police Bob Beach said the vehicle was similar to that of a golf cart; only you stand up in it. Beach admitted the vehicle was a neat little thing but wasn't worth the vendor's price of $10,000.
Beach said that over the past years, Segways and golf carts have become a very convenient form of transportation for the police department.
The LUPD currently has one Segway and a "mule," something similar to that of a golf cart, at its disposal. These forms of transportation are most often used at night, so officers can get to and from buildings quickly and efficiently.
Beach commented that considering everyone in the state has not had a pay raise in five years, it wouldn't be smart to buy a $10,000 piece of equipment.
