SGA Discusses Campus Concerns and Innovations

On Tuesday, April 17, Student Government Association (SGA) President Brandon Fry was absent from the weekly meeting, but Vice President Matthew Hovey was present to assist in orders of business as usual.

The SGA meeting began with budget allocations to various student organizations. The SGA allocated $370.55 to Future Business Leaders of American- Phi Beta Lambda, $150 to Longwood University Ambassadors, $132.99 to AMOR and $356.40 to national honorary society for undergraduate communication studies scholars Lambda Pi Eta.

The SGA expressed a variety of personal and student concerns during open forum. One senator took it upon himself to report that several female students feel there should be feminine hygiene receptacles in the women's restrooms on campus. Another representative said bricks have gone missing from the pathways near Wheeler Lawn.

As open forum continued, one senator said it would be sanitary and helpful to students with allergies or colds to have tissues in Janet D. Greenwood Library. Hovey said this was a suggestion he would bring up to Student Health and Wellness.

Another open forum concern was, despite the fact they had multiple meals left, a number of students have been unable to swipe into Dorrill Dining Hall (D-Hall) when they desired to because of the designated meal periods. Several senators said this will change next semester due to the new block meal plans for D-Hall which will allow students to use their meal swipes exactly when they wish to.

There were also complaints about some of the sprinklers on campus spraying doors or sidewalks instead of the grass and other plants. The final open forum concern was more of a suggestion to replace the light bulbs around outdoor areas on campus to increase student safety.

The final SGA meeting of the academic year will take place on Tuesday, April 24 in the BC rooms of Lankford Student Union.
