The Student Government Association (SGA) discussed student concerns for the majority of the April 10 meeting as well as SGA's veto of a fund allocated at the March 27 session. This week's meeting began with open forum, during which several senators brought concerns to the Senate.
Sen. Sarah Sharp said there have been cleanliness issues with some of the yogurt items at Einstein Bagels in the Lankford Student Union Lancer Café. She also said the Health and Fitness Center has been closing about 15 minutes early lately. In response, President Brandon Fry said this is done so the center can close on time.
Webmaster Kasey Haddock said she saw a student openly smoking in undesignated areas. Fry reminded the SGA that the smoking policy is self-policing and anyone has the ability to approach any student who is violating the policy.
Haddock also mentioned a large amount of students have been leaving their dishes, silverware and trash at Dorrill Dining Hall tables. Haddock said a number of these individuals were allegedly members of Greek organizations, so Greek Representative Dan Hughes said he would bring this up in his department.
At previous meetings, senators mentioned campus radio station WMLU 91.3 FM has reportedly been canceling events, and another senator said the radio station canceled another event this weekend. Fry said he will contact the president of WMLU about these concerns.
Freshman Class Representative Molly Monaghan said freshman class registration for fall 2012 courses went well without any server crashes. A few senators praised ARAMARK for the improvements in service at Einstein Bagels.
SGA approved a number of organizations during Tuesday's meeting. They moved to reactivate Table Top Games, an organization where members gather to play games such as Monopoly. The SGA also approved the Longwood Student Nursing Council and the Longwood University Car Club and Automotive Enthusiasts, two automobile-related clubs with separate purposes.
SGA allocated $1,160 to InterVarsity at Longwood and Hampden-Sydney to finance a summer conference for four members. In addition, the Senate approved $2,371 for Relay for Life's movie during the event in April.
Fry announced the veto of the $10,125 allocation previously approved for SGA funded student printing. Fry explained it is hard to estimate the amount needed for student printing, among other reasons; therefore, the allocation is not feasible for the budget at this time.
The next SGA meeting will take place on Tuesday, April 17 in the BC rooms of the Student Union.
