Longwood University’s Web Communications team officially launched a new mobile web app on Monday, Feb. 18. The app can be accessed at m.longwood.edu.
Students, faculty and staff received an email announcing the mobile web app on Friday, which David Hooper, director of Web Communications, said was not intentional.
However, Hooper said the majority of the features were available on Friday, with the exception of the reader for the university home page.
Hooper said the mobile app has been in the works for about a year. He said the Web Communications team finally had the necessary amount of staff and resources to launch the app after striving to implement such a product.
"This was kind of the first phase," said Hooper. “We wanted to get out some core content and services for the campus community.”
Among the mobile web app's features are a faculty/staff directory, campus map, events/ calendars, library services, photo galleries, athletic news and information, social media updates, latest university news, admissions infornmation, YouTube videos, emergency alerts and announcments, dining information, university information an full function search.
Hooper said there may eventually be a second phase in the web app process, as Web Communications has come up with several ideas and concepts, but the current focus is on what the team can do to improve the existing app.
"What we want to do at this point is get some feedback and really hear what's working, what's missing, what can be improved, what can be added, the would really benefit faculty, staff and students" said Hooper.
So far, Hooper said, a few students have emailed the Web COmmunications team with positive feedback and minor suggestions.
"We've heard back form a lot of faculty and staff that really think it's going to be great benefit," Hooper added.
The Web Communications team encourages anyone with ideas or suggestions to email their comments to webteam@longwood.edu.
