SGA Cut Short to Attend Formal Announcement of LU's New President

The Student Government Association (SGA) meeting that took place on Tues., March 26, began with Secretary Steven Sommer making a motion to adjourn the March 19 meeting, since the SGA did not have quorum at the time to formally do so.

It was noted that the continuing discussion regarding off-campus organizations and their involvement with recognized campus organizations would continue next week as well.

This week’s new business was primarily comprised of the Student Finance Committee report and allocations, headed by Treasurer Queen Burrell.

One of the motions was to allocate $110 to the Honor Students’ Association for movie rights to a documentary called to be shown during an event promoting hunger awareness. The motion was passed to allocate the money.

Phi Mu Delta Fraternity asked SFC to allocate $3,800 to bring the Save a Life tour to Longwood next semester. The motion failed since the event would take place next semester, and the SGA only allows allocations for the current semester.

The last order of new business was a request to allocate $250 to the Society of Physics Students, who asked for the money to help pay for a concrete boat and trebuchet competition against Hampden- Sydney College.

The motion failed due to ongoing payment issues with the organization — it was recommended to not allocate the money until these issues were remedied. Burrell then mentioned that the SFC would be sending their final organization budgets for next year to the SGA for final approval at next week’s meeting.

It was also brought forth to the SGA to approve the constitution of the National Retail Federation and Student Association. Since there was no representative from the organization present, this motion was tabled.

A letter from Dr. Jason Milne was read to the senators of the SGA. Though Milne commended the SGA for funding the Big Event, he was disappointed in the lack of participation on their part. A senator argued that the Big Event committee did not come to the SGA regarding participation until the last minute, a potential factor in the lack of SGA participation, and that in previous semesters they had enough time to get involved.

The next SGA meeting will take place in the BC rooms of Lankford Student Union on Tues., April 2.
