Are You Prepared To Laugh Your ASA Off?

Alpha Sigma Alpha (ASA) sorority would like to invite you to Laugh Your “ASA” Off in a night filled with comedy. Held on Thursday, April 11, the event starts at 7 p.m. and will be held in Jarman Auditorium.

Lauren Flood, the philanthropy chair for ASA, said, “Usually [the acts are] stand up comedy. However, without giving too much away, [I can say that] we have a few different renditions of stand-up comedy this year.”

So, it won’t be someone standing on a stage, holding a microphone while telling somewhat humorous stories to try to get people to laugh? Good to know. But being different isn’t easy. Will the stand up comedy involve clowns? Will it involve fire? Clowns on fire?

Last year marked the first annual Laugh Your ASA Off, a fundraiser thought up by the entire chapter. According to Flood, the event was “seamlessly executed” by her predecessor, the previous philanthropy chair Megan O’Laughlen. The ticket sales of last year’s event marked around 270 tickets sold, and the amount of money that was collected was roughly around $500.

When asked if students would need to pay to attend the event this year, Flood said, “Yes, tickets are being sold at the box office for $2 before the event and $3 at the door the night of the event. All proceeds are going to two of our national philanthropies, S. June Smith Center and Special Olympics.”

The S. June Smith Center is a center that supports children with disabilities and was founded by Dr. S. June Smith. In 1965, Smith founded the center to meet the needs of infants and preschool children with developmental delays and disabilities. Smith was also a National Officer of Alpha Sigma Alpha and a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, as well as a graduate of Temple University for her Bachelor’s in early childhood education, Columbia Teacher’s College for her Master’s degree and Penn State where she received her Doctorate in 1945.

If ticket sales go the same as they did last year, ASA should be looking at around $510 from 10 tickets bought at the door the night of the event, while the rest of the 240 tickets would come from advance sales.

When asked whether ASA would continue the event in years to come, Flood responded, “Absolutely, I have every intention to help the philanthropic chair next year host the event, and I hope it will be continued after I leave.”

So, if interested in finding out just what makes this year’s batch of comedic college students different from last year’s, or if you want to help out two charities for the price of one event or if you just need to kill some time on Thursday, be sure to attend ASA’s second annual Laugh Your ASA Off.

For any questions about the event, you can contact Lauren Flood at lauren.flood@live.longwood.edu or you can go onto the event’s Facebook page.

Best of luck to all the stand up comics at the event. Hopefully the laughs will be ever in their favor. May the laughs be with them!
