SGA Finishes Budget Allocations for the 2013-2014 Year

Organization budget allocations for the 2013-2014 academic year continued during the Tuesday, April 9 Student Government Association (SGA) meeting.

To start, the Senate moved to strike open forum from the agenda in order to allow more room for budget allocations. SGA President Donald Knight then swore in Gabby Spain as a senator.

Historian Paige Rollins brought forward amendments to constitutions of already existing organizations. Women’s Club Lacrosse added amendments that included community service and elections at the end of the year, which SGA approved. Honors Student Association added duties to vice president, eliminated student representatives and included a community service position to the executive board. The Senate also approved these amendments.

Rollins also presented constitutions of two new organizations. The SGA approved the Longwood University Sportsman Club and the Virginia Youth College Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

The Senate then made final cuts, revisions and approvals of the 2013-2014 organizational budgets. The final allocated total came to $605,283.80.

Following the budget allocation process, Dr. Tim Pierson, vice president for Student Affairs and adviser to the SGA, addressed the shooting that occurred at Lancer Park on Saturday evening. He admitted that there was a time lapse in communication regarding the incident, as it was reported to the police at 7:45 p.m. but not communicated to students until 10:15 p.m.

Pierson said after complaints from students and parents, this kind of situation will be handled with a text message regarding the situation that directs students to further updates on the university website. For more information on the incident, see “Fatal Shooting at Lancer Park Construction Site Raises Campus Safety Concerns” on page 1.

Pierson also mentioned a possible gubernatorial debate hosted by the SGA next fall, which, if executed successfully, could become a signature event. SGA elections began today, Wednesday, at midnight, and polls will remain open on CollegiateLink until Friday.

The next SGA meeting will take place on Tuesday, April 16 in the BC rooms of Lankford Student Union.
