‘Tina in the Sky with Diamonds?’ Nah, How about ‘Carrie’ instead!

As someone who has never seen “Carrie,” I can still tell you that nothing about the Stephen King novel screams “Beatles.” But alas, it’s in the episode we’re about to dive into.

The beginning of the episode has Sam contemplating gay marriage and who takes the last name—more proof that Ryan Murphy trolls Tumblr because that discussion was going on just last week.

However, Sue interrupts this odd and potentially annoying conversation to bring you the nominees for Prom Court! Wait…what?

In the past two seasons (seasons two and three respectively), Prom King and Queen was such a big thing, students were going through private files and faking their sexuality just for a shot to win the crown. Now, it’s just a brief mention in an announcement.

Anyway, Blaine and Artie are two of the nominees for Prom King while Tina and Kitty are nominated for Prom Queen, and Kitty slowly becomes this viewer’s favorite by quietly pointing out that she’s only a sophomore. Ah Kitty, you question this and yet you don’t question Ryder still being in the choir room?

Tina finally gets an actual solo this season (and probably her only one) as she begins to sing “Revolution” but gets cut off by the bell. Let me just take this moment to give props to the band kids. Not only do they know when the Glee kids are going to randomly burst out into song, but they know what song is to be sung as well. Major props, random band kids.

But enough of this! The viewers are whisked to New York where Rachel is complaining about the possibility that she won’t get the lead role in the first Broadway play she auditioned for. However, Santana cuts the complain train off with her yeast infection commercial; causing many to burst out laughing at the line “I like yeast in my bagel but not in my muffin.” Not really something one would expect from “Glee”.

Unfortunately, the viewers are whisked back to Lima where thank gods, Sue is still the queen of continuity by pointing out that members of the Glee club randomly don’t show up to school, making meningitis shots necessary for Sam and Schue.

Really “Glee”? What is it with you and nurse plots? Season one was bad enough, and that only lasted an episode!

Back to New York, Kurt thankfully has a solo this episode with the song “Get Back” but Rachel takes it over as she so often does. The scene lasts maybe a minute before the viewer is whisked back to Lima where confrontation is brewing between fellow cheerleaders Kitty and Bree.

Kitty continues to grow as the fan favorite as she answers her own question about why no one will believe her that she didn’t put the posters up that tell people to vote for her for Prom Queen: “Oh right, the habitual lying.”

The viewers are met with a double dose of awkward with Santana flirting/bonding with Dani (played by Demi Lovato) and Sam freaking out about his feelings for the nurse—and butchering “Something in the Way She Moves.” It’s supposed to be a good song but the intro to it and the random floating just ruin the moment.

Thankfully, the viewers are graced with a good song as Dani and Santana duet in “Here Comes the Sun.” While I normally don’t sing to celebrate the sun rising, if I can get a significant other out of the deal I might just try. Santana certainly does as she walks Dani to her apartment and is thanked with a kiss.

Whisked back to Prom, the viewers are treated to the most lackluster Prom ever. Brittany’s Dinosaur Prom was better! Marley, Unique, Ryder and Jake all sing “Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” and Sue continues to make the viewers chuckle with her snappy one liners. Stoner Brett is announced Prom King while Tina is named Prom Queen.

Cue the “Carrie”-esque prank. If it had been done last season, I might have congratulated “Glee” on the continuity seeing as Rachel mentioned “Carrie” in season three.

But no, this season is one season too late. The Glee kids all band together to get Tina back in the dance and the viewers are honestly reminded of season two’s Prom Queen.
