Contrary to the beliefs of many students, Longwood’s theatre department will not be performing a play about condoms, or anything relatively close to that topic. In fact, “Trojan Women” is a classic Greek tragedy that shadows the historical events surrounding the fall of Troy.
The audience will follow the lives of the women of Troy after war has raged through and demolished their city. Their husbands have been murdered and the rest of their family members are about to be shoved into slavery. Throughout the play, the women will encounter many obstacles and tragedies that contribute to a not-so-happy ending.
While this play is a classic that has been around since 415 B.C., Longwood’s theatre department is adding in their own little twist to make this play truly unique. The actors have inserted excerpts from Gabriel Fauré’s famous operatic piece entitled “Requiem” throughout the play. So not only will the audience be enjoying the retelling of a classic Greek tragedy, but they will also be immersed in a classic 19th century opera. Don’t let the word "opera" turn you away from seeing this remarkable play.
Freshmen cast members Binta Barry and Olivia Pedigo share that this is a show you definitely don’t want to miss. Not only is it unique in the fact that it’s a combination of two classics, but also in the way that the actors perform and interpret the plot.
According to Pedigo, “You don’t necessarily need to listen to the dialogue to understand what’s happening; the actors are able to present the story in a way that you can, more or less, feel what’s happening.”
