Women’s Basketball Losing Streak Extends to Six Games

The women’s basketball team continued their slide last week, losing two road games to continue their slide toward the bottom of the conference standings. Against Campbell on Thursday, Daeisha Brown scored a game-high 16 points in a losing effort, as Longwood (6-16, 3-10 Big South) fell to the Camels, 63-54.

Heather Tobeck led the team with nine rebounds, but Campbell’s 19-point lead with five minutes left was far too much for the Lancers to overcome, even with a late 15-4 run that closed the gap to eight. CU led 29- 23 at halftime and was led by Kiera Gaines’ 15 points.

“We lost our focus in the second half, but we were able to regain it and make a push at the end. This was definitely a step in the right direction. We have to continue to get better each day,” Head Coach Bill Reinson said.

At Coastal Carolina on Saturday, Longwood led 32- 29 at halftime but couldn’t carry it over to the second half, as the Chanticleers outscored LU 35- 23 in the second to win 64-55.

Brown again had a game-high for points with 25, but a 15-1 run in the second half by Coastal helped put the game away. CCU had scored 31 of their points at the line and was 31-for-38 at the line on the game.

“It's tough to win when you go seven minutes without scoring. We had some great looks at the basket early in the second half, but they just wouldn't fall for us,” Reinson said. He continued, “Coastal scored almost half their points from the free throw line. That is a definite problem moving forward.” Reinson continued, “I thought we played hard defensively, but we can't give up that many free throws.”

Two home games are on the slate this week for LU, who sits ninth out of 11 teams in the conference standings. They host Charleston Southern on Thursday at 7 p.m. before playing Presbyterian on Saturday at 2 p.m.
