A Sweet and FunWay to Raise Money for a Great Cause S.E.A.L Hosts Pie a Professor Day on Brock Commons for Students and Faculty

Last Wednesday, April 18, Student Educators for Active Leadership (S.E.A.L.) hosted their very first Pie a Professor Day. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., students, faculty and anyone walking down Brock Commons with a dollar to spare was able to purchase a pie and throw it into the face of one of their professors, or even a fellow classmate.

The purpose of this sweet, yet messy event was to promote awareness and raise money for Camp Fantastic. Nestled in the Shenandoah Valley, Camp Fantastic is a week long summer camp for children diagnosed with all different types of cancer.

While at this camp, they can go canoeing, ride horses and have that typical sleep away camp experience that every child loves, while also bonding with children in their same situation.

Thanks to the Farmville bakery for donating all of the pies, free of charge, S.E.A.L was able to put on this event with virtually no cost. Therefore, all of their proceeds went directly to Camp Fantastic to purchase various supplies and to help fund activities.

Sophomore Catie Rostock, S.E.A.L’s Service Chair and the mastermind of this event said, “We went through about 60 pies total and the students who participated loved it. It was a good stress reliever for them so close to finals, and who wouldn’t want a chance to pie a professor in the face?”

English professor Dr. Barry was reportedly yelling at students from across campus, basically daring them to pie him. And a surprising number of students took him up on his offer. S.E.A.L. members were astounded at the amount of people that showed up for the event.

And when professors were unavailable to be pied, brave students put their faces on the chopping block. Sophomore S.E.A.L. member Emily Gallihugh described her crazy pie-ing experience by saying, “It’s definitely weird to have a pie shoved in your face, that’s for sure! I had no idea what to expect! I didn’t get to taste the pie as much as I would like, but it ended up EVERYWHERE ELSE. In my nose, in my hair, in my eyelashes.”

But if you missed out on this fun and hilarious experience, don’t be bummed, they’re planning on holding the event again next year too. “It was definitely better than I expected for our first year and something that I will be continuing in the future,” said Catie Rostock.

Thanks to so many wonderful professors and students being great sports, the event was able to raise a substantial amount of money for an amazing cause.
