The first avenger is back in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” The movie opens with Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) still adjusting to life in the modern world while working for S.H.E.I.L.D.
He struggles with the work he does for them and wonders if he is taking the right actions. When one of their ships is attacked, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) becomes suspicious of having spies inside their agency, but soon after this first attack, he is overtaken as well.
Meanwhile, Steve is isolated from everyone in S.H.E.I.L.D. while they attempt to kill him. He ends up teaming up with Natasha (Scarlett Johansson) to get to the bottom of what is really going on inside their corporation. Steve has to figure out who can be trusted and if the Winter Soldier is just a legend as everyone makes it out to be. Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford) is the mysterious former head of S.H.E.I.L.D. who recruited Nick Fury.
The audience can easily sense something is off about his character, but you don’t really know what it is.
When Steve runs out of people to trust, he turns to his new friend Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), who is commonly known as the Falcon. Sam is a fellow soldier who knows how hard it can be to come back from war which makes it easier for Steve to relate to him. Chris Evans continues to prove himself as the one and only actor who can portray Captain America. He exceptionally captures Steve’s struggle to connect with the modern world and try to find out where he really fits in.
The audience can definitely see the changing emotions that his character goes through in this movie. Steve’s determination to do the right thing and try to figure out whom to trust is clearly portrayed as well. Scarlett Johansson joins him as the Black Widow and shows her character’s determination to hide from her mysterious past while helping Steve make things right with S.H.E.I.L.D.
Robert Redford pulls off the mysterious character perfectly and is also fabulous as a double agent. Even if the actor does not believe in cause that his character does, the audience would never know.
Anthony Mackie, the newest addition to this universe, did a great job capturing the Falcon’s character and his friendship and trust in Steve.
The storyline is amazing and a continuation of where the audience left Captain America in “The Avengers”. The fight sequences were very impressive and on a larger scale than the first Captain America.
This movie had a very different feel than the first one did. Part of that is because of the time period difference, but also because as the character and story grows, so does the scale of the movies.
The cinematography, music and acting all come together to make a great movie. Even people who are not die-hard Marvel fans will enjoy this story of humanity as Steve struggles to find his place in the world.
Marvel has done it again with this fantastic movie and people are anxiously waiting to see what they do with the next Avengers movie. The producers took this movie to a different level than the previous ones.
This movie gets four out of five stars from me, and I personally enjoyed it even more than the first Captain America movie. And as Marvel fans know, you never leave the theater until the credits are completely finished rolling.
