Lacrosse Loses First Big South Conference Game Saturday

The four game winning streak for the girls lacrosse came to an end this weekend when the team played Big South defending champions High Point University losing 17-7.

The women’s overall record is now 7-8 and they are 4-1 in the Big South Conference play.

Junior Kacey Norwood scored two goals, had two assists and led the team with four points.

Sophomore Katie McHugh added to the offensive tally for the Lancers by scoring three goals; senior Mary Barondess and junior Sarah Arndt both scored one goal a piece.

Also adding assists for Longwood was Senior Lauren Prasnicki and Junior Liz Trainer who both had one.Sophomore Sarah Butler had seven draws, leading the team.

Goalie Christian Acker, Jr. had eight saves during her complete game performance.

Longwood started off the game jumping out to a 4-0 run. Norwood and Prasnicki connected in the beginning of the game with Prasnicki assisting Norwood’s goal.

McHugh scored an unassisted goal followed by Barondess scoring on a free position opportunity.

Not too long after the third goal was scored, Trainer made a strong pass to Arndt who scored the fourth goal, 4-0.

“I think the High Point game started off well with an impressive 4 goal burst, but once we had a few turnovers and lost momentum, it was difficult to get the momentum back,” said Coach Jones.

High Point would not trail the Lancers for too long; they went on to score four unassisted goals, tying the game 4-4.

There was a point in the first half that the defense controlled the game without allowing a goal for 11 minutes. McHugh would then score a goal that would give the Lancers the lead.

High Point would later score three goals with three minutes left in the first half, giving the Panthers an 8-5 lead going into halftime.

After halftime, High Point came out scoring seven goals in the first 16 minutes of the second half.

The Lancers added two more goals coming from McHugh and Norwood making the score 15-7. Those would be the last goals that the Lancers would score, but before the game was over High Point ended it by scoring two more goals, making the final score 17-7.

“When you play a good team like High Point, you really need to bring your “A” game, and unfortunately, although we had a few bright spots, we just didn’t quite bring our “A” game for the entire time,” said Coach Jones.

Now that Longwood lost to High Point, they are in third place in the Big South standings; trailing behind undefeated High Point and Davidson.

“Heading in to the final two games of the season and in anticipation of the upcoming Big South Conference tournament, the team will continue to work on improving our fundamentals and cutting down our turnovers. We’ll also work on playing consistent defense, while not getting too stagnant on offense,” added Coach Jones.

The next two games the Lancers play before the Big South Conference tournament are a home game Friday, April 25, against Davidson, the Senior Day game. Then, they travel to play in-conference rival Liberty University, Sunday, April 27.
