The men’s and women’s golf teams had two different sets of outcomes this past week, in their respective tournaments, with the regular season winding down.
The women’s team played 54 holes at the par-72 River Landing Golf Club in Wilmington, N.C., on Saturday and Sunday in their final match of the regular season.
The Lancers finished eighth out of nine teams at the UNC Wilmington Seahawk Classic with an overall score of 315-319-322—956.
Seniors Amanda Steinhagen and Hannah Pierce each shot 232 to tie for 16th overall out of the field of 50.
Steinhagen shot 77-79-76—232 and Pierce shot 76-75-81—232, while freshman Courtney Tolton tied for 32nd with 81-83-79—243 and sophomore Asha Bala Krishnan finished in a tie for 42nd with a score of 81-82-87—250. Senior Megan McCracken finished in a tie for 47th after shooting 92-89-86—267.
Elon won the tournament with a score of 907. The rest of the field finished as follows: UNCWilmington, Delaware, Old Dominion, Eastern Michigan, Ball State, Radford, Longwood and Richmond.The women’s golf team’s next competition will be at the Big
South Championship from Sunday- Tuesday in Ninety Six, S.C.
The men’s golf team returned to action on Sunday and Monday after a two-week layoff at the 36-hole Lafayette Invitational in Hellertown, Pa.
Longwood scored their first win since the fall of 2011, defeating the 18-team field with an overall score of 300-295—595.
Freshman Clayton Forren led the team with a 74-71—145 score, which was good enough for second overall in the 101-man field.
Drexel’s sophomore Chris Crawford won the individual portion of the tournament, shooting a 73- 71—144 at the par-71 Silver Creek Country Club. Alex O’Dell finished in a tie for 16th with a score of 73- 78—151.
Juniors Blake Carter and Jason Schumacher and senior Kyle Bodin finished in a tie for 19th. Carter shot a 79-73—152, while Schumacher shot a 78-74—152, and Bodin shot a 75-77—152.
Following the Lancers down the leaderboard were, in order: Central Connecticut State, Hofstra, Bucknell, Drexel, LaSalle, Rider, Villanova, Canisus, Monmouth, Colgate, Lehigh, Manhattan, two groups from Lafayette, Iona, Siena and Niagara.
Longwood’s final regular season match is the 54-hole Coca-Cola Invitational hosted by Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C. from Monday-Tuesday.
The Big South Championship is scheduled for April 21-23 in Ninety- Six, S.C.
