The priority for the Tuesday, April 1 Student Government Association’s (SGA) agenda was the 2014-2015 budget approval process for clubs and organizations.
However, the meeting began on a somber note when SGA President Haley Vest announced that the required 1/6 of the student population did not vote in the SGA elections; therefore, the casted votes would not count.
She added that the Board of Visitors’ 2.1 percent increase received positive feedback from the Longwood community. She ended this announcement by revealing that the election announcement was an April Fools’ joke.
Check next week’s issue of The Rotunda for full election results and a more in-depth look at the candidates’ platforms.
Historian Paige Rollins then brought the Paleontology Club Constitution to the Senate. The club is for students interested in paleontology, fun learning activities and discussion surrounding the field. The SGA approved the constitution.
Dr. Tim Pierson, Vice President for Student Affairs and adviser to the SGA, said students’ involvement in the Big Event and Relay for Life last weekend said “such a statement about Longwood students giving back, commendations to them.”
He also commended the involvement of Rollins, who is part of Longwood 175’s celebration committee, and other students in the Longwood 175th Anniversary celebrations.
Pierson also announced that Dr. Bryan Rowland, former Vice President for University Advancement, will soon hold a new position at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
His wife, Stephanie Rowland, J.D., is currently Director of the Office of Student Conduct and Integrity and will leave the state and her position at the end of this academic year.
On behalf of the Student Finance Committee (SFC), Treasurer Alex Julian moved to allocate $184 to Honor Board for shuttle reimbursement, $674 to Longwood Ambassadors for polo shirts and name tags, and $278.80 to the SGA for mileage reimbursement fees for a statewide SGA conference. The SGA approved all allocations.
Vice President Steven Sommer began the budget approval process by informing the Senate that the 2014-2015 total budget allocations were $733,793.11, and that the SGA needed to cut approximately $34,000 in order to meet the under $700,000 minimum.
After a series of cuts and revisions, the SGA voted on a final budget of $689,993.11 for the 2014- 2015 fiscal year.
Next week’s SGA meeting will be held in the BC Rooms of Lankford Student Union at 3:45 p.m.
