Softball Continues to Be a Force in the Big South Lancers continue winning streak to improve to 25-7

Longwood softball has won seven straight games since March 30.

Five of those wins came this past week when they swept UVA, who plays in the Atlantic Coast Conference, at home.

They then travelled down to Gardner-Webb, sweeping the three game series against the Runnin’ Bulldogs.

After this week, the Lancers are 25-7 overall and are 12-2 in the Big South Conference.

The Lancers beat the Cavaliers in their double header winning the first game 6-4 and the second game 8-4.

Junior Megan Baltzell had three hits, four RBI and two runs.

Adding onto the effort were juniors Katie Shinrock and Chelsea Sciacca who both went two for five at the plate. Shinrock scored four runs, while Sciacca had three RBI.

Junior Libby Morris picked up two wins, now 11-2, after the double header striking out four and giving up one earned run in 10.2 innings of work.

The next series the Lancers played in was down in North Carolina against Gardner-Webb University.

The first game was won by a score of 8-0, ending the game in the fifth inning due to the NCAA mercy rule. The Lancers then took the second game of the double header by a score of 5-1.

Shinrock, junior Casey Lifsey and sophomore Carly Adams all went 3-5 from the plate.

Lifsey had a team high three RBI, along with Shinrock’s two and Adams’ one.

Morris picked up her 12th win of the season by pitching a complete
game in the first game; striking out six, giving up only one hit and getting her third shoutout of the season.

In game two, freshman Elizabeth McCarthy picked up her ninth win of the season by pitching a complete game striking out two, giving up three hits and giving up only one earned run.

In the series finale, the team won a close game 4-3 that came down to the seventh inning.

Longwood was up 2-1 going into the seventh inning, then Lifsey hit a solo home run and Baltzell hit a triple that scored the winning run.

Morris picked up her 13th win of the season when she pitched a complete game and had three strikeouts. Sciacca also added to the effort by getting one hit and two runs.

The Lancers will travel Wednesday, April 9, where they will play a non-conference double header against James Madison University beginning at 5 p.m
