Spring Weekend 2014 Brings Exciting Headlining Artists

Spring Weekend was here and went; from the music to the classic traditions such as oozeball and the beer garden, to the picnic-style food catered by the Dorrill Dining Hall, Spring Weekend was definitely the place to be on April 11-13.

Spring Weekend started after classes ended on Friday and by the end of it on Sunday, we were all sad to see it go by.

It was definitely a weekend for the record books from SOJA performing Friday night to Hoodie Allen rapping his way into Saturday night.

The weekend began with many students participating in the tradition of oozeball when students must assemble a team of at least 6 players and compete against another team in a pit of mud and water.

“Although it was messy, it was extremely fun!” sophomore Vicki Buchheit said.

“I had so much fun with everyone and it was nice hearing people cheering me on. It made me want to win that much more.” She continued.

Friday night was the night of bandfest; it all led up to SOJA with a line-up of music that the WMLU 91.3 fm staff provided. This included Andy Jordan, JACT, Noiseheads, Daylight, MURS, Unwritten Law and finally SOJA.

“I was extremely excited for SOJA,” junior Morgan Ellis said. “I was near the very front with some of my best friends, and I had the most amazing time. It was definitely an unforgettable Spring Weekend. Not only that, but I also got the chance to meet them afterwards which was incredible because not many people get that opportunity and they are a huge band. So I really appreciated the fact that they took the time to take a picture with me.”

Saturday began with the student organization booths, which included sororities and fraternities selling handmade products along with other clubs including the Longwood Company of Belly Dance who gave henna tattoos and sold mason jars.

The crafting club sold raffle tickets for prizes and a banner that each entrant was able to paint.

The Beer Garden opened up Saturday to everyone who was 21 and older so they had the chance to drink and taste different types of beer along with some wine.

The Saturday line-up was even more incredible with The Northerners opening up the evening at 4 p.m. followed up by The Lonely Biscuits, Radical Something and DJ Tradewark. At 9:30, Hoodie Allen, who was the main performance, took the stage.

“Hoodie Allen was amazing,” said freshman Holly Watson. “I had to work earlier than night and during my shift, I couldn’t wait to see him. I was rapping his song ‘No Interruption’ to my co-workers, so once he made his way to the stage and sang that song, it was amazing.”

During his performance there was a dance off that included Natalie Joseph, Deanna Carwile and two others.

One participant did not even attend Longwood and was not received very well by the audience. Natalie Joseph took the stage and won the crowd over, along with an autographed t-shirt.

After Allen’s performance, DJ Tradewark came back on and helped pump up the crowd even more by asking the crowd, “Longwood Turn Down for What?” which fired up the crowd even more.
