The sun shined brightly over Lancaster Hall this Monday as the new members of Longwood University’s Student Government Association (SGA), Conduct Board and Honor Board were welcomed and honored before beginning their duties for the upcoming academic year.
Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Tim Pierson spoke to the new members who donned formal academic robes, saying, “We learn so much from our experiences.” As the advisor for all three organizations, Pierson said, “I learn from students. It’s something in these positions, and you reflect on these positions.” Speaking on the members of the 2013-2014 academic year’s members of the organizations, Pierson said, “I really want to say in this last year, I’m really pleased.” Describing Former President of SGA Haley Vest, he said, “She’s led with distinction,” further saying that she has been a great example to the student body. Pierson described the level of autonomy in Longwood University’s SGA as “fairly unique.”
It is not just a matter of how involved the student body is, but how the student body is able to govern themselves as well as their own issues.
Vest commented on the SGA’s newly elected president, Joseph Gills, saying, “I’m really excited for him and the GA. I have full faith that he will be able to handle it.” Gills said, “I look forward to working with these guys.” While Gills said that he could not comment on one single goal he hopes to work on, he stated, “There are a lot of different things that have to be done.”
