Women’s Tennis Has to Say Goodbye to Two Seniors: Longwood’s women’s tennis graduates Sarah Moomau and Bethany Law

Once Longwood’s women’s tennis team lost on Monday, Apr. 14, seniors Sarah Moomau and Bethany Law had played their last match as

Lancers. It was a tough season for the two seniors to leave on, but they still loved every minute of it.

“Our team has always been close … and we just have a blast together. We can be stuck on a bus for hours and still have fun. We create memories,” said Moomau while talking about her favorite memory. “Last year was our first year in the Big South Conference. When we won the first round, it was real exciting just because we were the first Longwood team to win a Big South Conference tournament match.”

Law’s favorite memory took place this past Wednesday, Apr. 9, during Senior Day.

“I got to have my family come down and watch me play for the first time. I had all my sisters come out and they made a huge banner. My grandpa actually got to come, and then my aunt and uncle too,” said Law.

Neither Law nor Moomau plans to continue their tennis careers after college.

Both Law and Moomau said that they are becoming burned out from playing tennis their whole lives and are ready to explore life outside of tennis.

Instead, each woman plans to further her education. Moomau, a Psychology Major, will be going to a counseling program in order to get her Master’s degree, while Law will be continuing on by applying to physical therapy schools.

Moomau and Law were both on the team during a change of coaching, when Head Coach Casey Wharton was hired to replace the now men’s Head Coach Jakob Gustafson. “Both had a lot more time for us to work on our scheduling,” said Moomau. Both also stated that they are very good, yet very different coaches. Moomau stated that Jak is very quiet, while Law finished her sentence saying, “Casey is more talkative and upbeat.”

“It was a very good change because when you’re a coach of two teams you really don’t have the time to put in for both; Jak did the best that he could, but every D1 (Division I) program needs two coaches,” said Law.

Both girls will miss Longwood’s friendly campus environment, the relationships they have developed during their time at Longwood and their sorority sisters. Law is a sister of Zeta Tau Alpha and Moomau a sister of Alpha Delta Pi.

“When you’re walking on campus you always see someone you know or that you’re close to,” said Law. According to Law and Moomau, the team will now turn to junior Malin Allgurin for leadership and guidance. “She definitely listens whenever you need someone to talk to,” said Law.

“Malin is definitely the most intense when it comes to tennis. When everyone feels like being lazy or doesn’t want to be at practice that day, she’s the one to be like ‘come on guys suck it up,’” said Moomau. “She’s definitely a leader, not a follower.” The two seniors will be leaving Longwood with many memories of their time spent at Longwood, and friendships they won’t forget.
