Breaking Bad Soars on Emmy Leaderboard with Five Wins

On Aug. 25, the 66th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards were held in Downtown Los Angeles, California. For those who are Emmy fanatics, you probably noticed a change in the date from past years as scheduling conflicts arose.

Normally the Emmy’s are held on the Sunday before Labor Day, yet the MTV Video Music Awards had scheduled to air on this day long before the Emmy’s did. This did not prevent the night from being a stellar one, it just provided a few challenges. This year’s host was comedian Seth Meyers from the Late Night Show, and he helped keep the crowd lively and upbeat.

When nominations were released, HBO led network nominations with 36, followed far behind by FX which only racked up 19. Nominations between the programs were close as The Normal Heart took the lead with nine nominations, followed by American Horror Story: Coven and Fargo each with eight.

By the end of the night the big winner was Breaking Bad, which took home five Emmy’s ahead of both Modern Family and Sherlock. These categories included Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Modern Family swept the comedy series with three wins. Both Breaking Bad and Modern Family received Emmy’s for a consecutive year and swept their respective categories.

At the end of the night, a memoriam was held for those who had passed away in the past year. Sara Bareilles led the tribute with her hit “Smile,” as the screen showed their faces and names. The last image toappear was that of actor and comedian, Robin Williams, who passed away recently. Actor Billy Crystal, whom Williams had the pleasure of working with, paid a heartfelt tribute to the late actor by speaking on how his close friend had impacted his life.

Crystal also belted out a note in honor of Williams that seemed never ending, yet meant so much to so many. This year’s show had a record number of viewers, as well as tweets by viewers. Now we will have to wait a year to see if these shows can continue to hold their own or if new winners will take the stage.
