Field Hockey Splits Weekend Games: Lancers continue the season with an overall 1-1 record

After coming off a 1-0 win against Holy Cross to start off their 2014 campaign, the Lancers fell in double-overtime to Umass Lowell 4-3 on Sunday to finish the weekend. The Lancers now sit at (1-1) on the season.

In the season opener, after controlling the entire game, it wasn’t until the 43:47 mark that the Lancers were able to put in the go ahead goal to seal a 1-0 victory. The Lancers had an astounding 10 shots in the second half, but only managed to scramble to one goal. Junior, Jen Burris was the catalyst for the Lancers, putting in the goal off a Meghan O’Connor shot and rebound. Burris fired a total of 6 shots placing two on goal, leading the Lancers’ offensive attack.

Sunday’s matchup with Umass Lowell was a totally different story for the Lancers as they conceded a goal just over five minutes into the game. The Lancers then tied the game up just four minutes later with a goal by junior, Hollie MacDonald and then took the lead at the 23:09 mark when Jen Burris rattled the cage for her second goal of the season. Umass Lowell wasn’t done yet as they tied the game at two with a goal from Georgia Cowderoy and took the lead, 3-2, just after the 61 minute mark.

The Lancers weren’t ready to give up as freshman, Edel Nyland, who led the Lancers with 10 shots, found the cage on her eighth, which tied the game with five minutes left in the game. In the first overtime, the Lancers were in control of the match but could never get a winning goal, as their three shots were all unable to find the cage.

During the second overtime, the Lancer Lil-Sophie Achterwinter rifled a shot at the Umass Lowell goalkeeper from the edge of the circle but she made the save and Lowell was able to clear and keep the Lancers at bay. Shortly after, Lowell’s Eleonore Agneessens was able to throw an outlet pass Bianca Jones, Jones dribbled into the circle and scored past the Lancers Lauren Benard for the game winner.

The Lancers will travel to Harrisonburg to face James Madison University this Friday, Sept. 5.
