Freshman Spotlight: Alex Dworetzky

When asked to use one word or phrase to describe himself as a student at Longwood, first year Alex Dworetzky answered, “Alex is…at peace with himself.” Before coming to Longwood University, Dworetzky came from a small, Quaker K-12 school called, Virginia Beach Friend’s School in his hometown of Virginia Beach, Virginia. After graduating from a class of eight students, Dworetzky was ready to move on to a bigger school to get his college degree.

Alex first looked at Longwood the fall of his senior year in high school. He was drawn by the pretty campus, and when he came for a visit, a lot of the students smiled, said hello, waved at him and made him feel welcomed.

Dworetzky said, “Going to a Quaker school, it taught me to be a really nice person and that’s what I saw here at Longwood. A lot of really nice people.”

Right now, Dworetzky is a History major, but is exploring different options as he moves into the future. He has been thinking about switching his major to business because his dad works in real estate. However, if he does decide to stay as a History major, he would like to concentrate in Political Science or Education. Next semester, he wants to take a wide variety of classes to possibly discover what it is that he wants to do. When asked why he chose History, he said, “I like Virginia history. I kind of grew up around Jamestown, grew up around Williamsburg. Basically, where we were founded as a country.”

His favorite thing at Longwood, thus far, has been class schedules. Dworetzky finds them enjoyable because they are much different from high school. Right now, he

is taking 13 credits, and says his class schedule feels very lenient.

Recently, Dworetzky tried out for the club soccer team, and is ready to get involved in more clubs and organizations on campus. He is thinking about getting involved

by playing intramural sports, thanks to his fun experiences at the Health and Fitness Center. He is also looking forward to going to basketball games, and like many students, he is looking forward to graduation.

Coming from a school where he was in a large amount of leadership positions, Dworetzky is ready to get involved. In high school, he was a Quaker Student Leader, vice president of his class and the captain of his soccer team. In the next couple of years at Longwood, Dworetzky would like to take some leadership positions and “make a name for himself” here at Longwood.

But right now, his main focuses are on school. Starting out every day with French class at 8 a.m., he likes that most of his classes are in the morning, so that he has time to explore the campus and make new friends. Dworetzky says that his LSEM class, and

his suitemates have become great friends at Longwood. They enjoy going out to eat in the Longwood Landings to hang out, and exploring Farmville.

He also has a brother who just graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) this past year. Alex says he looks up to his brother, who has a great job now, tutoring VCU athletes.

He says, “I definitely want to grow and become mature. I want to get a good internship, maybe going soon, and definitely want to strive in the environment here,

and really learn how to grow up and get that job.”

One of the activities that Alex really enjoys is running. He likes to go to the High Bridge State Park and run on the trail to clear his mind.

Another important thing he would like to get out of his college experience is to meet someone special. After growing up with a close family, Dworetzky’s family is one of the most important things in his life. After being adopted from Romania at age 2, he says that his family is what truly helped him get to this point in his life.

“They helped me get to college. Now I am here, and I really want to return the favor and show them that I’m ready to be at this level in my life,” Dworetzky responded.

Needless to say, Dworetzky has found himself “at peace” at Longwood University. His final words to me during our interview were, “I feel satisfied her
