Meet Kelsey McCormick: A freshman’s perspective on the first week of her freshman year

The first week of classes has come and gone, soon the semester will fly by, but freshman Kelsey McCormick was excited for her first week of classes to end and for her weekend to arrive.

“It was extremely relieving when my classes ended; I was so stressed out during the whole week, I am extremely excited to relax during the weekend and take time for myself.”

Kelsey’s day begins every day at 8 a.m., which can be extremely difficult for college students because college students have the tendency to have insomnia throughout the night and become zombies in the morning.

“It’s not as bad as I assumed it would be,” said McCormick, “I usually take a nap after class and go to my class later that day afterwards.”

Like most new students at Longwood University, McCormick was hesitant about the first day of school and making friends.

“The thing that I love most about Longwood is that everyone is so welcoming and willing to do anything they can to help. I have friends that are upperclassmen here that helped me feel comfortable and so at home; they helped me find my classes and everything,” said McCormick, “they were also extremely adamant about me making friends with my fellow peers, which I was nervous about, but everything worked out.”

When it came to dorm living and being selected to have a random roommate, McCormick was anxious for move-in day.

“I like dorm living, besides being locked out twice within the first week, it’s okay; we have a triple suite so the room is smaller than usual, but my suitemates and I get along,” said McCormick.

“I also have a pretty great roommate who I get along well with, in the beginning it was awkward because we were both new and didn’t know each other—but then I realized that we’re both freshman and we’re supposed to be awkward.”

Along with the community aspect at Longwood University, McCormick also enjoyed New Lancer Days with her peer mentor and fellow peers.

“I thought they were informative, and allowed me to have a better understanding of my school and responsibilities; they had a lot of speakers which I really liked, it made New Lancer Days more fun.”

With the first week done, McCormick is excited for the semester to begin and to see what her freshman year at Longwood University has to offer her.

“I hope to get involved in organizations around campus, make more friends and just have a great first year here. High school went by extremely fast, I’m just hoping that college won’t be the exact same—but in reality, I know it will be. I’m just trying to make the most of it for now.”

Freshman year is only beginning, there will be times where the stress is unbearable, friendships don’t work out and drama ensues, but something that I have learned here is Longwood University is a helpful community to everyone.
