SGA Allocations for Club Money

The weekly Student Government Association’s (SGA) board meeting was kept quick and brief due to the student Involvement Fair. Senator Constance Garner passed on the Role Award this week to Senator Chelsea Carrol, for her diligence in discussing concerns regarding campus life often during open forum. Gills then moved to the swearing in of the freshman class representatives to Senate. Then Gills moved on to review how the board meeting would run in preparation for the Involvement Fair soon after.

Moving on to the executive charge, Gills reminded senators to routinely re-read the SGA’s Constitution and bylaws “so we can approve movements for organizations,” as updated.

Treasurer Jessica Darst began allocations, starting with a motion to allocate $1,034.82 to Student Government Association being that they need new polos, as previously mentioned by Kensy, as well as new logos, and a senate fee for the updated tee-shirts for all members, due to an additional number of board members this year. Vice President, Adam Fletcher called to a vote for the updated SGA logo shirt, where the motion passed.

Darst then moved to allocate $240 to the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), looking to have a party, in which they want to gain publicity. They asked for a DJ as well as security. President of the Counsil, Nicole Reed, was present as the representative for any questions. Seeing as there were none, Vice President Fletcher called for vote, the motion passed.

Darst then called to allocate $3,007.60 to the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), calling for allocations to attend a national conference, and looking to bring four members to the conference and luncheon. Representative of the Public Relations organization, Ben Stembridge, attended to answer any questions.

When asked what exactly the organization was about, Stembridge answered, “PRSSA is the daughter of PRSA, [Public Relations Society of America]… bringing PR majors [together].”

Senator Carrol asked where the luncheon would be held. Stembridge answered that it would be in Richmond, where PR professionals in position meet with PRSSA representatives, to exchange business cards, begin networking, and help “advance students perspective what they can do.”

Darst asked if the conference would be open to all students. Stembridge answered, “mostly for PRSSA members,” adding that official members of the organization nationwide have to be PR to attend the luncheon. Fletcher then took it to a vote for the allocation of funding for the national conference luncheon, motion passed.

The Outdoor Club was called, asking for white water rafting costs and gas mileage [money]. Darst explained, “what happened was, they booked something last year and couldn’t go on the trip, [because they] didn’t pay in advance.”

Yet part of the funding had already been paid. Darst added that they are now asking for the rest to be funded. Allocations to fund $1,268.07 to the Outdoor Club passed for vote.

Gills closed the board meeting to move motion remains of striking open forum, adding announcements on Senator job tasks for the Involvement Fair.

“Encourage students to write concerns, opinions, stationed at tables by the student union,” finished President Gills, closing the Student Government Association board meeting.
