Alpha Delta Pi’s 10th Annual Miles 4 Smiles event attracted many students this year. This was the first year the event was a glow in the dark walk. Students walked a mile around campus decked out in glow sticks and neon paint. The participants were enthusiastic and cheered as they walked around campus.
Students from several different organizations came to represent their club at the walk. Connor Wheeler, a brother of Theta Chi and a participant at the walk, said he was there to support Alpha Delta Pi and the Ronald McDonald house.
The walk is typically a 5k and is held on a Saturday morning. This year, the sisters decided to make the walk shorter to get more people involved. It was held on Thursday, Oct. 23 at 6 p.m. Students showed up at six to sign in, get glow sticks and get their face painted with neon paint.
The walk started at 6:30 in front of the Student Union, went all the way around campus and ended back in front of the Student Union.
At the end of the walk, Alpha Delta Pi sisters cheered the crowd for completing the walk. To thank those who participated, they held a raffle at the end for two gifts cards to El Patron. The lucky winners excitedly collected their gift cards and the event came to an end.
The event was to help raise money for Alpha Delta Pi’s philanthropy, the Ronald McDonald house. To participate in the Miles 4 Smiles glow in the dark walk, you had to pay five dollars and that money went to the Ronald McDonald House.
Aly Lowry, the philanthropy chair for Longwood’s Alpha Delta Pi chapter, helped run the event. She stated that last year the profit from the annual walk was about $1000. She said she hopes they broke that record with this year’s profit.
Anne Wilson, as sister of Alpha Delta Pi who interned at the Ronald McDonald house, said that the chapter has been partnered with the Ronald McDonald house since 1979. Since their partnership, they have contributed $7.8 million to the Ronald McDonald House.
The Ronald McDonald House Charity is an independent nonprofit organization. Their mission is to create support programs that directly improve the health and well being of children.
