SGA meeting 11/11/2014

The Student Government Association (SGA) picked up with Senator Constance Garner handing the presentation of the Rowe Award to Senator Justin Parker.

President Joseph Gills invited Longwood campus Master Plan committee to speak on behalf of the latest details and plans to move forward on campus construction plans. Campus Planning and Design Facilities Planner and Master Plan coordinator, Jerry Jerome spoke to SGA on implementations of campus affairs. Longwood’s previous Campus Master Plan was approved in 2008, and updated in Fall 2013.

“Campus, for the future, would like to have some sort of planned guidance,” said Jerome who went over what parking and plan services will need. The plan is set “for a total of 6,000 students by 2025.” Master Plan committee members want feedback and a “gathered status” of the current campus facilities, including what students need, and what they would like to help on discovering additional ways to improve campus life.

“We’ve heard from students, one of the concepts students wanted was to expand Lankford,” stated Jerome. Jerome discussed possible future plans for a new building between Lankford and Greenwood Library, as a student academic center, including the registrar’s office. Designs are not finished, Jerome added, “we’re hoping to have [a] connection with the library, however, the physical connection has not been designed.”

Campus Planning and design manager, Lori Blackwood stated that the design of the Master plan and additional further details will be made public on Longwood’s website.

Jerry Jerome discussed continued issues on campus, in which senate members spoke on matters of no commuter parking, saying that spaces fill up quickly.

The option to make campus more wheelchair-accessible was also discussed, proposing additional ramps as a solution.

Senate members added, an idea to expand the dining hall and Greenwood library. Jerome left the senate board with questions to consider, what would the general student population like on campus most. The Master Plan committee presented SGA with an updated current campus map, produced by Longwood’s architects as a gift to the senate board.

Open Forum began with talk of the possibility for automatic waitlists for registration.

Gills addressed next week’s National Sexual Assault Week of Action, bringing the It’s On Us campaign to campus. There are talks of implementing it next year. Gills will speak on the promotion of the campaign in the coming weeks.

Moving into New Business, Treasurer Jessica Darst moved to allocate $2,800 to Peer Health educators, as they are low on flu shots. It is believed that 800 students have had them. Requests for additional money for flu shots to obtain 300 more shots to offer students have been made. They are offering the shots on campus in the office. It was pointed out that Longwood is one of the few campuses in the country that offers flu shots.
