Though they couldn’t hear any music, from the point of view of any passersby along Brock Commons or Stubbs Lawn, there would have appeared to be a party going on in the Student Union Ballroom, last Friday. Lancer Productions held a Headphones Disco party where students could come to listen to music, dance, and sing along with their friends.
The concept of Headphones Disco allows people in attendance to get a pair of headphones where they have the ability to change between two different channels that the DJs are playing. They even have the opportunity to request the DJ play a certain song.
Students could have their own little dancing party as they jammed out to nonstop remixes of songs such as: “Blank Space,” “Fireball,” “Trumpets,” “Single Ladies,” “Yeah!” and even “Baby Got Back.” Students even managed to dance in unison to “The Cupid Shuffle” and “The Wobble.”
Jessica Hamilton, Lancer Productions’ Late Night Director, who was in charge of the event, was excited to see the success the new event generated. The idea for the event “We haven’t really done any parties or balls or things like that in while, so we decided to try and test it out to see if it worked,” said Hamilton, “and we thought it’d be a fun idea just to listen to music and have fun.”
And indeed students did have fun. Senior Erin Hessler and grad student Leighan Worden even brought Longwood alum Erin Kearvesoney to join in on the fun, “We heard about it and we heard people were coming so we came,” said Hessler, “And I’ve been to them before, like I’ve been to other ones back home and they’re a lot of fun.”
The ladies were of course were excited to hear some of their favorite tunes: “Well, we requested ‘Want You Back’ by Jackson 5, so we were excited when that came on and I always get excited when “Shake it Off” by Taylor Swift comes on,” Hessler chuckled.
The ladies continued to explain about the unique experience, “I like hearing people singing, but you can’t hear the music…this is really cool; I think more people should come. It’s funny and fun,” stated Kearvesoney.
Hessler added, “It’s also fun to listen to one station and watch people dance to the other station.”
“I’m glad they did this ‘cause when I went to the other ones, I came back and told my friends who are in LP that we need to have it here,” said Hessler.
With the great success of Headphones Disco, Hamilton believes that it could become an annual event for Lancer Productions. “I think it possibly could, because we have a really good turn out and everyone seems to be having a ton of fun.”
