According to WAVY, Norfolk police have confirmed the bodily remains found in Southampton yesterday to be Longwood freshman student AJ Hadsell's. AJ had been missing since March 2.
Norfolk Police told The Rotunda they received a tip in their investigation leading them to the 34000 block of Smiths Ferry Road, in Southampton County where the remains were found Thursday around 10 a.m. in the backyard of the property.
Norfolk Police spokeswoman Melinda Wray said the city's medical examiner identified the remains earlier today.
The department released this statement along with the information:
"Chief of Police Michael Goldsmith and the dedicated members of the Norfolk Police Department express their deepest sympathies to the Hadsell family and thank the many federal, state, and local agencies that have assisted throughout the course of this investigation."
AJ's mother, Jennifer Hadsell, told WAVY the Hadsell family has no connection to Southampton, but that AJ's father traveled to Franklin for work around the time of AJ's disappearance.
Anyone with any knowledge that might help detectives in this investigation is being asked to call the Norfolk Crime Line at 1-800-LOCK-U-UP.
