On Thursday, members of the Longwood community lined up on the front lawn of Lancaster as Sigma Kappa hosted their annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The walk, an annual event by Sigma Kappa, raises money to donate to the Alzheimer’s association, which goes to help Alzheimer’s care, support, research, awareness and advocacy.
Despite the rain, the walk had a turnout of about 300 people and raised $9,090 total. $2,500 of that was raised on the day of the walk. Beginning at 4 p.m. at Lancaster Hall, walk attendees walked around the border of campus and ended at the Longwood Landings for a total of a mile and a half.
“This walk is so incredibly special, whether or not you are affected by the disease, to show support and be there for those who are can make an incredible difference. This walk is a chance to bring awareness to a disease that affects families every day,” said junior Ally Werner.
“The walk this year was incredible to see so much support on Longwood's campus even with the chance of rain. That didn't stop anyone. Sigma Kappa is so grateful to see Longwood come together to walk to end Alzheimer's. It is just spectacular to see how much support students, faculty and staff and the town of Farmville give to support us!” Werner said.
“The turnout was great! We didn’t anticipate that many to participate because of the weather so we were shocked when so many people came out!” Jennie Thomas, Sigma Kappa’s Vice President of Philanthropic Service said.
Longwood Lancers showed that even though there might be a bit a bad weather on the horizon, they are still willing to participate in a good cause.
