SOFT: Lancers sweep Longwood Spring Fling

Elizabeth McCarthy

Big South Player of the Week and junior pitcher Elizabeth McCarthy picked up her second and third wins of the season, as well as her first save over the weekend in Longwood’s sweep of the Spring Fling.

The weekend saw the Lancers (7-2) take care of business with a 10-2 win over Hartford on Friday, 2-1 and 7-4 wins over Monmouth and Hartford, respectively, on Saturday, then finishing with 10-0 and 4-3 wins over Hartford and Monmouth, respectively, on Sunday.

Longwood was able to run-rule Hartford on Friday after a three-run first inning, as well as two runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

On Saturday, Longwood was able to scratch across runs in the third and fourth to overcome an early deficit to beat Monmouth, 2-1. In game two of the doubleheader, the Lancers used a three-run fifth inning to break a 4-4 tie on their way to a 7-4 win over Hartford.

In the Sunday finale, an eight-run third inning proved to be more than enough in a 10-0 run-rule shutout of Hartford. The second game of the doubleheader was much like the first matchup against Monmouth, this time with a little bit more offense. Longwood was able to match the Hawks’ two-run fourth then outdo their one-run fifth to take the 4-3 win.

Longwood will take on seven NCAA Tournament teams in their next nine games, including an appearance in the Bulldog Slamboree hosted by Mississippi State this weekend from Mar. 4 to Mar. 6.
