The Complaint Department: Construction and hosting the VP debate

Construction/Security in front of Willet causes students to walk around behind the library, Wygal, Bedford, etc. to get to their respective classes.

As I sit and type up this weak attempt of an opening statement beside the Bedford Fountain in order to at least try to focus on the work that I should have started much earlier, I’m unable to listen to the calm water and let the BS flow through me and onto my assignments. Once again, the construction on campus has been a loud and hideous distraction. So, here I am watching a little more than a dozen men fumble around and kick up dirt only to sweep it up again. But at least there are two men very busy at hanging up banners and boards to further decorate for the debate.

It might just be my opinion or common sense, but why not finish the task of actually building up the rest of the messes that are on campus before adding accessories? You can’t just sprinkle glitter on a pile of crap and expect it to not stink. And why are we only just now building things that could have been done during the summer break? Why do we even need a Student Success Center and a new Student Union? If anything, the concept of student success is kind of tossed out the window when we are constantly disrupted by the noise outside of the library and classrooms. Besides, even though we are paying for all of these changes, many students complain most of us are unlikely to see the finished product.

“It’s unfortunate that we will most likely graduate before we get to see the finished product,” said Longwood junior Gabby Griffith.

Fellow junior Harrison Runion said, “It feels like Longwood isn’t focusing on the current students, but on the future students instead.”

And I sure as hell didn’t get a say in whether or not the debate gets to be here, yet my tuition is used to fund slow moving “workers” that are building unnecessary things and leaving a mess around campus.

Scott Welty, another junior with plenty to say, added, “The construction has taken away some of the best things this school has to offer like the gym, pool and even walkways.”

“The debate is being shoved down our throats constantly and has caused frustration,” said Welty.

It seems we as students are spending more on hosting a party only a few of us are planning to attend, and to be frank, you can’t possibly believe whatever they do finish in time for the debate won’t look like a rush job from hell. So, here’s hoping Longwood has enough faith, luck and pixie dust to pull this off in time for the political event from hell.
