Longwood University hosted their annual Lancer Madness pep rally on Nov. 2 in Willett Hall. The rally came ahead of the men’s exhibition game against Hampden-Sydney on Nov. 5 and the women’s exhibition game against Randolph on Nov. 6.

“Lancer Madness is a time for all of the fans to come out and to interact with the athletes on the basketball team. It’s a time for us to showcase some of the cool things we can do, like three-point skills and dunk contest,” said sophomore forward Chris Shields.

The first five hundred students to arrive received free Longwood snapbacks and raffle tickets to win prizes throughout the rally.

Lancer Madness started out with an introduction of both the men’s and women’s basketball teams. Then the two teams performed a dance-off and interacted with the crowd, allowing them to choose the winner.

Next men’s basketball head coach Jayson Gee addressed the crowd, encouraging the Longwood students to come out and support the basketball teams this season. He expressed how important the fan support is for both the men’s and women’s basketball teams.

“It is a really cool experience for us because it is something special that we get to do. It’s a great time for us, and we like to get out in front of the students,” said redshirt freshman guard Kate Spradlin.

Spradlin was chosen to do the three-point contest for the past two years at Lancer Madness, and was the winner of this year’s contest.

Freshman forward JaShaun Smith, senior guard BK Ashe and redshirt sophomore guard Isaiah Walton were chosen to do the men’s dunk completion. Smith won the dunk contest by reprising his ESPN Top Play foul line dunk.

Lancer Madness also advertised both teams' exhibition games as the men’s team triumphed 93-85 over the Tigers in overtime while the women’s team won 67-37 against the WildCats.
