On this day: Nov. 21

Thanksgiving

Congratulations! We’ve made it to the 326th day of this leap year and you know what that means: only 40 more days until the end of this disaster of a year. Do you know what the best part is? We’re going to be so focused on Thanksgiving and Christmas, we won’t even notice the time slipping away. We’ve got it lucky.

Just think of all those other countries that don’t have Thanksgiving in between Halloween and Christmas. Time must go by so slowly for them. America may be lacking in many things, but at least holidays aren't one of them.

Speaking of Thanksgiving, let’s talk about its history.

The first Thanksgiving was in 1621 in Plymouth. The Wampanoag Indians gathered their autumn harvest and shared it with the Plymouth settlers. Now let’s jump back a bit to Nov. 21, 1620 and the signing of the Mayflower Compact. This historic document was instrumental in the formation of the Plymouth Colony and America’s first Thanksgiving. Without the Mayflower Compact, we’d never have the Thanksgiving we now know and love.

As America’s first ever holiday, Thanksgiving holds a special place in my heart. Without Thanksgiving, I’d have no excuse for wearing socks with turkeys on them. Thanksgiving is just so pure of heart, as opposed to the commercialized Christmas everyone gets so hyped up about. For the past 416 years, we’ve stayed true to the real meaning of Thanksgiving: being thankful and eating delicious food.

As you all gather around your family and friends this Thursday, don’t forget to thank the turkey for giving up its life for you. And thank your family and friends as well, I suppose.

Happy Thanksgiving!
