In this week’s Student Government Association (SGA) meeting, B.J. Keefer, advisor for the SGA at Lynchburg College, Wyatt Weaver, member of Lynchburg College's SGA and conduct board, Lauren Farrell, also a member of their SGA and Lindsey Van Zile, their senior class coordinator visited the Longwood SGA from Lynchburg, VA to discuss budget appeals with the executive council after the SGA meeting ended.
Cheryl Steele, assistant director of student engagement, presented to the senators the banner stating "I Pledge to Vote" from Oktoberfest.
The banner consisted of many signatures from students with motivation to vote in the upcoming Presidential Election on Nov. 8.
In regard to the Greenwood Library staying open until 2 a.m., the resolution that was mentioned in previous SGA meetings was given to Library Dean Brent Roberts. It was mentioned that Roberts has plans to seek out feedback pertaining to the possibility from faculty and students now that he has been given the resolution.
It was mentioned by one senator of possibly reaching out to the Politics Club, College of Republicans and College of Democrats to try and assist in handling any upcoming events relating to the elections.
New constitutions had been posted in the SGA office for organizations such as Sign Language Club, Longwood Players and Scootering Club that will be voted on in upcoming SGA meetings in order to be approved.
Dr. Tim Pierson, vice president of student affairs, stated that there had been many concerns from students about dietary needs from the food served at Dorrill Dining Hall.
A box may be placed in the dining hall lobby where students can turn in written concerns about the food or service.
Pierson also pointed out that 900 surveys had been received by the dining hall primarily pertaining to the food. Pierson also encouraged all of the students to attend upcoming "Dine With The Director" events to voice concerns in regard to the dining hall.
In the Oct. 18 SGA meeting, there was an open discussion regarding diversity on campus from Steele, Jonathan Page, director for citizen leadership and social justice education and Onie McKenzie, assistant vice president for student affairs for assessment and professional development. Further discussions, as a result from the open discussion, will take place Wednesday Nov. 2 in Hiner Hall room 207 and on Nov. 8 in Bedford Hall room 111.
Historian Maribeth Stotler-Watkins mentioned that Uptown Coffee Café is welcoming all kinds of fundraising. If any organizations are interested in pursuing a fundraising event in Uptown, to visit the cafe for more information.
One senator added how the Sport and Leisure Industry Management (SLIM) organization will be interested in pursuing new members in the future as their constitution was recently passed in the Oct. 18 meeting.
The SGA will not meet on Tuesday Nov. 8 because of Election Day.
