Citizen Leader Awards open for nominations

The nomination process for the annual Citizen Leader Awards is now open to students, faculty and staff.

The Citizen Leader Awards have been recognizing members of the Lancer community for their contributions to Longwood for over 25 years.

A nomination cookie party was held on Feb. 14 in which approximately 55 nominations were completed.

There are three categories of awards; Individual Citizen Leader, Faculty/Staff Individual and Student Employment/Supervisor, with a total of 15 awards within the categories combined.

Some include the Distinguished Leadership/Community Contributions award for seniors, the Emerging Leader Award for freshmen and sophomores, the Ellen Master Award for Significant Service and the Faculty Staff Citizen Leader Award.

After collecting nominations, a committee of faculty, staff and students will review the applications and notify everyone nominated while providing additional instructions.  The award ceremony will be held on Apr. 9 in the Grand Ballroom of the Dorrill Dining Hall.

Each recipient can invite up to four guests and must RSVP through the link provided by the committees.

For those who have won a Citizen Leader Award in the past, there is an opportunity to win again, but the committee must review a new application based on different accomplishments than in years past.

Director of the University Center and Student Activities, Susan Sullivan, has overseen the event for the past 17 years. Commenting on the awards, she said, “it’s an opportunity for us to honor and thank the students, faculty and staff who have really given their time and talent during this past year at Longwood.”

The deadline to nominate has been extended to Feb. 24.  To nominate, visit www.longwood.edu/studentunion and click on Citizen Leader Award Nominations.
