As the seasons change, a modern cast of R&B artists are on the rise, including Daniel Caesar, H.E.R, and Syd Tha Kyd. These artists have given the public a view of their world while vividly expressing their emotions. Lyrics based on stories depicting adolescent love, bravery, life experience and so forth has gained a profound acceptance within the music industry today as people value a genuine and honest upbringing.
Though these artists are staying true to the genre's mission, they’ve managed to distance themselves from the traditional rules of R&B, typically consisting of slow melodies.
Heavily drawing inspiration from rock-n-roll, pop and gospel, these artists are currently in a category of their own as they maneuver through the industry. Currently, these rising stars are creating a new brand for the already popularized genre.
Emerging onto the music scene and into social media feeds, Canadian based artist Daniel Caesar has embodied the soul and emotion needed in the genre. One of his latest singles, “Get You” featuring Kali Uchis, can be viewed as a self-reflection on his life and past relationships, he explained in a Genius interview.
“We’re in our own world, kind of locked away, doing our thing, and everything outside is crazy and falling apart,” said Caesar.
He also recently did an interview with Billboard where he briefly explained what “Get You” was actually about.
“Get You” is a song of praise to a love I didn’t even feel I deserved at the time," he said. "Being with someone you truly adore and being present enough in the moment that the world literally slows down and you ask yourself how did I stumble into this? I’m always shooting myself in the foot, but I’m in here.”
However, building on his the praise from “Get You,” Caesar took his act further with the release of his latest project of “Freudian” in August 2017. The album “Freudian” consists of 10 songs featuring like-minded artists including Syd Tha Kyd and H.E.R.
Intending to keep the artist's identity hidden, H.E.R. has managed to unmask her talent anonymously while making a name for herself in the music industry. Recently, on tour with the Bryson Tiller and Metro Boomin’, the SoundCloud singer turned signed RCA artist, H.E.R. has made an impression on the public eye.
In 2016, H.E.R. released her first album “H.E.R., Vol. 1” in which she sampled a classic song of Aaliyah’s “Come Over” in the background of “Your Way.” This year, the anonymous R&B artist released her second album, “H.E.R., Vol. 2.”
Unintentionally revealing her identity, the hippie neo soul artist Syd Tha Kyd still manages to keep the music industry on their toes. Once the widely acclaimed front runner of the band, “The Internet,” Syd decided to branch off from the group and create a project of her own. Nevertheless, earlier this year, Syd dropped her latest project, “Fin,” which could represent a fresh start as a solo artist.
Overall, these artists are on the rise, exploiting their talents and influencing a new prospective of listeners is definitely something to look forward to this upcoming fall.
Entering the fall, R&B artist Daniel Caesar continues his rise in the music world with his smooth and slow melodies, selling out concerts on his international tour.
