You're crusty, admit it!

Your face is dry and crusty!

Don’t be ashamed, most people’s skin is usually dry and flaky at this time of year. It's Spring (although Farmville weather begs to differ), which means we have officially entered that awkward transitioning stage between the seasons.

It’s time to change your wardrobe and skin care routine! It’s important to adjust care according to the weather in order to supply your skin with the appropriate care it needs. The difference in seasonal temperature, humidity and sun exposure can affect your delicate skin in various ways.

Exfoliate the flakes!

The Winter weather makes skin dry and flaky. In order to get rid of those snowflakes, one must exfoliate to lift the dead skin. Dermatologist Mona Gohara says, "We lose 50 million skin cells a day, and if they remain on the skin, it can look dull and dry." (Byrdie.com)  Dry skin is the worst! You can tell your skin is dry if it feels tight and is flakey.

Exfoliating is the simple solution to combat the dryness, unclog the pores and give your face a glow. No need to purchase expensive exfoliate or name brand products, just look in your kitchen cabinet. Making DIY exfoliates are quick, easy and inexpensive. They usually require two ingredients: a base and the “scrub”. A favorite is the brown sugar scrub, which is just brown sugar and coconut oil. Remember not to go too crazy with face scrubs. Your skin is delicate so use a scrub only three or four times a week. If your face is extremely sensitive exfoliate once or twice a week at the most.

Moisture is the key!

The dry atmosphere from the past season has constantly drained the moisture and natural oils from your skin. The American Academy of Dermatology website states “When your skin becomes dry, your body makes more oil. The extra oil can clog your pores, which may lead to more breakouts. The right moisturizer can prevent your skin from becoming dry and irritated.” (AAD.org) Once you find your holy grail moisturizer use it daily after you wash your face. If the skin is never dry to being with you save yourself the hassle of dealing with pimples. One less thing to worry about is always ideal as a college student.

Following the facial exfoliate, apply a cream to your face to rejuvenate and refresh it. A personal favorite is Jergan's lotion (with the original scent), but if you're feeling more adventurous try another DIY! Mix honey and olive oil together to make a simple skin moisturizer (add a egg for additional moisture).

I scream, you scream, we all scream for SUNSCREEN!

Get into the habit of applying sunscreen.Even if your melanin is popping, your skin still would appreciate a little protection from those sunny rays. The more pale you are, the more frequently you should apply and the opposite goes for the darker the complexions. Also it prevents cancer so why not add a light layer every once in a while before the summer.  “Sunscreen use can help prevent skin cancer by protecting you from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. Anyone can get skin cancer, regardless of age, gender or race. In fact, it is estimated that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.”(AAD.org)  The earlier in the season you start frequently applying sunscreen, the better off your skin will be in the blazing summer.

Consistency, consistency, consistency!

Keep up with your simple skin care routine so your skin is always healthy and balanced (not oily or dry). The more you supply your face with the attention it needs (and drink plenty of water), your skin will become blemish free and have a beautiful glow. A clear face is a happy face, take care of it as you would the rest of your body. Now show the world that beautiful face of yours!
