Takeoff fails his mission with “ The Last Rocket”

The Last Rocket Album Cover

Takeoff is a member of the popular group Migos, who has been taking over the airways for a couple of years now. His fellow members Quavo and Offset already released their solo projects, with Takeoff being the last person to step up to the plate with his album “The Last Rocket.”

“The Last Rocket” starts off with the song “Martian” which includes a nice trap beat with Takeoff flowing well with the track. The song lacks lyricism, talking about normal things like money and drugs instead of sticking to theme of space.

The songs have no deeper meaning to them, making this a major downfall with this album. Instead, Takeoff relies on his flow and production, which does work in some instances but not for the whole album.

Songs like “Last Memory” and “She Goin Wink” sound good but Takeoff just doesn’t bring anything to the table lyrically. “Last Memory” includes a really creative beat with synthesizer providing a nice touch to the track. However, again Takeoff really doesn’t say anything here and since the song is short it feels like Takeoff could have provided more.

“She Goin Wink” features Quavo and feels like a Migos song without Offset. Quavo also did not provide anything new either.

“Vacation,” one the best tracks on this album, focuses on Takeoff’s strengths: his funny ad-lib and flow. This track talks about Takeoff’s lavish life which fits the theme of the song. Takeoff also plays with his flow on this song as well. He calls himself “NFL Tom Brady, black Slim Shady,” which one of many of his witty lyrics on this track.

“Casper” is another good track, with Takeoff talking about a car called a White Wraith, resembling the color of a ghost. Both of these songs show the strengths of Takeoff and how he can be a decent artist that can provide some substance in songs.

“Bruce Wayne” is also an interesting track on this album which pays homage to the DC hero Batman. In this track he does mention the Batmobile referencing it as a fancy car. He also mentions himself as Bruce because of his riches. The beat on this track is not as impressive as the other beats on this album but the concept of the song and its flow mesh really well together.

Overall this album is mediocre at best and the negatives overshadow the positives on this album. Even when Takeoff shows promise with some on this album his other songs just fall short of anything interesting. 2.5/5
