Stemming back from the start of their music career in the late 1990s, the Backstreet Boys have made music in the ever-changing pop genre and have come out with their latest album “DNA”. The album shows how the Boys can hang with new pop artists while sticking to their roots.
“Don’t go breaking my heart” starts the album, and this song sounds different from their earlier songs. It takes a more energetic approach by providing resounding drums and some techno elements. However, you can tell it’s the Backstreet Boys because of their style that they sing in.
They also show this in the song “Breathe” when they start singing a capella. This song sounds like classic Backstreet Boys and it’s one of the best songs on this album. The way the group harmonizes on this track is incredible.
“Passionate” on the other hand brings some funk to this album with the Boys doing their thing. This track touches on the topic about being passionate about somebody, and giving them their attention.
“Chances” includes this dope mixture between a capella and a smooth pop beat. This talks about a love scenario between a boy and a girl who have strong feelings for each other which progresses to a strong relationship. The Boys also express how lucky he is to be with this girl.
“No Place” follows “Chances” as a chill song where the Boys again, use their talents to make a good song. With this song being slower it gives the Boys a chance to display their unique voices. This song talks about how there is no place that they would rather be than with that special person and how they would go far to make it happen.
“Chateau” provides an old school R&B vibe with, the Boys putting on a great performance with their vocals. This song refers to a guy trying to flatter a woman in hopes of being together again.
“Ok” closes the album introducing a stellar guitar rift with a subtle trap beat. The five-member boy band also mesh well with the beat by providing some masterful vocals. The song goes “Bad things’ll happen, but none of that matters. We’ll find a way, as long as I’m with you I’m okay”.
The Backstreet Boys show that that they still got it after all these years with “DNA”. The chemistry that they have is something to behold. However, there is a lingering issue with this album and that would be the content.
The Boys never made an attempt to change the subject on the album which takes away from their performance. If the boys could have switched up at least once, the album would not sound repetitive. If they would have featured other popular artists, the album could have been spiced up from the lackluster content.
Overall The Backstreet Boys did a good job transitioning into the new age of pop. From the production to even the voices everything meshes well together. However, with the lack of content this album can sound like one song. 3.5/5
