Wiz Khalifa & Curren$y participate in the 10-year challenge with “2009”

2009 Album Cover

Wiz Khalifa & Curren$y have a very good relationship in the music industry. They released their first mixtape, “How Fly,” in 2009 and it showed how they could change the game in the future. Now, with both rappers deep into their own solo careers, they decided to come together again and release “2009”.

“2009” is a decent album from the two artists, with some flashbacks to their old mixtape “How Fly”.

“Garage Talk” starts the album, with an old school 80s hip hop vibe. Khalifa comes in and delivers a dope verse that meshes well to the beat. Curren$y follows right after with his rapping, which is more aggressive and tactical.

“10 piece” slows the album down with a melodic trap beat with Curren$y delivering his verse. On this track, he goes off beat, which is overwhelming, since his lyrics are really good. Wiz does an amazing job flowing with this beat, as well as providing some good subject material.

“Find A Way” provides a vibe similar to “10 piece.” However, this time Khalifa starts the track with his versatile flow. Curren$y does a better job flowing on this beat, providing some good lyrics. Both artists on this song explain how they found a way to manage success in the music industry. Wiz and Currency do a good job with switching up the subject material, making this one of the best songs on the album.

“No Clout Chasin” is an interesting song that talks about how artists don’t have to change their styles to become popular. Wiz Khalifa and Curren$y have great chemistry on this song, especially during the first part where Curren$y follows right after Wiz’s hook. Wiz then comes in a delivers a really good verse. Lyrics like “Now the police don’t even trip when I roll up” and “Game polished, did our best to keep these lames off us”, sound slick with Wiz’s flow.

“Stone Gentleman” is a typical song about weed, with Wiz Khalifa and Curren$y talking about their love for the drug. Khalifa starts the song bragging about his fame and riches and how weed is legal now in some states. Curren$y also talks about his love for drugs by mentioning, “Wrap it up like a brick of coke / Call a play like a give-and-go”. The beat on this song is really smooth, with old school hip-hop drums and baseline in the background.

The chemistry between Wiz Khalifa and Curren$y is great. However it does get a bit underwhelming throughout the album. Some of the songs sound more like freestyles than actual tracks. Also, some of the beats sound repetitive. Wiz Khalifa’s lyricism is okay on this album but, it sounds like he’s said these things before. Overall “2009” features some repayable tracks and the artists do provide a good performance. However, this album does fall short and seems more than a little dated. 3/5
