Just about five miles down the road from Longwood University lies a restaurant which offers unique cuisine and the chance for Longwood students to try something new. The Fishin' Pig, located on Farmville Road, is considered a halfway point between Longwood and Hampden-Sydney College.
The restaurant offers a variety of food, specializing in various types of meat: burgers, brisket, fish and chicken, as well as fried food and sides such as french fries, hushpuppies and homemade slaw. They also offer allergy-friendly meals for those that are vegetarian and gluten-free, such as caesar salads and macaroni and cheese.
The Fishin’ Pig is the result of two restaurants that came to Farmville in the early 2000s. Matt Hurley opened Mulligan’s Sports Grille in Farmville after relocating from Tennessee and then founded Grady’s BBQ in 2006. Shortly thereafter, Shorty’s Famous Seafood & Chicken Breading was founded. In October 2012, the companies decided to combine their culinary concoctions together to create The Fishin’ Pig, and it has been in business since 2013.
They are open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays, 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. on Saturdays and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays. Students are also able to use Lancer CA$H, a prepaid debit account, at The Fishin’ Pig as well.
